Bald-faced News: 3/11/17 Not NieR-ly Enough Time

I played NieR: Automata a LOT this week, and we’re going to keep this post short so I can get back to it ASAP.

What was Played

I’m only 15 hours in with only route A under my belt, but NieR: Automata feels like both Yoko Taro and Platinum are at the top of their game with this one. The combat is tight and the story is that special Taro brand of weird meets great meets fascinating. So far this is a strong contender for one of the best videogame stories in a long while.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Features Trailer (JP)

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe seems like a much needed killer app for the Switch. Breath of the Wild is getting tons of acclaim, but it is also available on the Wii U. The Switch does have a poor launch line up but by this holiday season it will have several great games like Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to help push units

Middle-earth: Shadow of War First Gameplay

The first gameplay and gameplay impressions are out for Middle-earth: Shadow of War. With an expanded Nemesis system and dragon riding, Shadow of War actually seems like the rare sequel that actually meaningfully builds on its predecessor.

Fire Emblem Echoes Trailer

This trailer is mostly cinematics and story, but just from this short glimpse it seems much more interesting that the story of Awakening or Fates.

Andromeda Launch Trailer

This is the worst trailer for Andromeda¬†so far, which is a shame since the build up of information so far has been great. Video games need to stop using the crutch of “dramatic pop song or pop song cover”.

Persona 5 Update

Persona 5 still is not available in North America

VA-11 HALL-A Update

VA-11 HALL-A still isn’t out for the Vita.

What’s on the Plate

I’m going to do my best to beat Automata before Andromeda comes out and then try to beat Andromeda before Persona 5 comes out.

    1. I haven’t finished Automata yet, but Yoko Taro, the director, writes some of the most intriguing stories out there. The music is stellar, and the moment to moment gameplay is probably going to be the best third-person action this year thanks to Platinum. As for how Automata compares with the other major releases right now, I’d have to say that’s a matter of taste. If you can’t handle Japanese style melodrama I can’t say this’ll turn you around, and Horizon Zero Dawn is also set in a post-post apocalypse world so that may scratch that itch if you aren’t down for Automata’s style. Granted, two of my most anticipated releases: Mass Effect Andromeda and Persona 5, aren’t out yet, but I can see Automata being right up there with some of my favorites of all time. I’d say NieR: Automata’s best selling point is its uniqueness and weirdness, there really isn’t anything else like it. Hope that long winded response answers some of your questions. I’ll look into Now Loading Creators, it sounds like a cool group!
