Bald-faced News 7/9/17: Don’t Get Cooked

We’ve got Pillars, new squid kids, and more musings on Metroid Prime.

What Was Played

Mostly Metroid Prime 1 & 2 with some Momodora thrown in. After beating MP1 and moving directly to MP2, I realize I might have been a tad harsh on Prime 2 last week. While I still think the first two areas (Agon Wastes and Torvus Bog) look like rejected art from MP1, the actual level design of these areas is far better. in MP1 the areas are filled with a lot of empty back tracking, which, while a huge staple of the Metroid franchise, becomes tedious. MP2’s areas have more “shortcuts” that open up as you get more powers and abilities. One thing I can;t forgive is the lack of creativity in most of the minor bosses. In Metroid games, you often have to fight a boss who possess the power you get for defeating them, and in Metroid Prime 2 Echoes these bosses are often just a more intimidating Ing with the name “Jump Guardian” or “Boost Guardian”. Occasionally they throw in a possessed creature that’s a larger, more deadly version of it’s standard form but those are few and far between. But overall, I was too harsh last week and have gained a greater appreciation for MP2. It’s still the worst game in the Prime series.

Momodora: Reverie Under Moonlight is a great little 2D metroidvania with a darker anime artstyle and an emphasis on switching between ranged and melee combat. Definitely worth a look if you haven’t heard of it yet.

Pillars of Eternity coming to PS4 & XB1

Ever since Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition came to consoles with superb controller support, I’ve always wondered at the possibility of getting old CRPGs like Baldur’s Gate 12 ported to consoles for us peasants, and while Pillars isn’t those games, it’s dang close. The port is Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition. The port will contain the DLC campaigns White March Prast 1 & 2. Maybe this means we’ll get a port of Tyranny  somewhere down the road. I think it’s best for everyone if we can find a standardized controller control scheme for CRPGs. CRPGs are almost second to none when it comes to creating immersive game worlds, and the lack of an easy way to port these insanely complicated games to consoles has robbed many players of the chance to experience classics. Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition is set to release on August 29, 2017.

Spaltoon 2 Reveals New Mascots: Pearl and Marina

I’m going to say this here and now, these two are no Callie and Marie, but they’re still great and deserve your love. Also, their group name is “Off the Hook”, and that’s cooler than just “Squid Sisters”.

Pearl (left) and Marina (right)

These two were revealed alongside the announcement of the first Splatfest on 7/15: Cake vs. Ice Cream. This Splatfest is technically taking place before the game’s release, but the game will be available in a demo-ish download fashion where you can download the game for free and play in the Splatfest, but will have to pay to play after the Splatfest is over.

I’m so happy to see Splatoon 2 getting pushed like this, the first game was an underrated gem and watching Nintendo put some real marketing force behind the sequel gives me hope for the franchise’s continued existence. Splatoon has a vibe to it that no other game has managed to capture; the first game had the “radical, cool kid” feel that Sonic has tried and failed to achieve since his inception, but without the cringey side of that aesthetic. And make no mistake, the overall Splatoon aesthetic should make me cringe into a black hole, but the pure, shameless, uncynical, fun that Splatoon  exudes is just so darn infectious. This time Spla2n seems to be going for a more rap/hip-hop vibe this time around instead of a straight j-pop feel, and it works. The idea that Pearl and Marina are two halves of a duo, and not really competitors the way Callie and Marie were makes it tougher to choose a favorite, and I love both Marina and Pearl, but I’m leaning #TeamPearl.

Bonus RTJ fan art of Off the Hook because I’m glad I’m not the only person who thought of this.

VA-11 HALL-A Update

Still no word on the release date for the Vita port of VA-11 HALL-A.

What’s On The Plate

More Metroid Prime and probably much more continued job searching so I can get a Switch soon. I’m going to try and carve out sometime to give that Netflix Castlevania show a shot. I’m also hoping to do more spur of the moment posts like the terrible Trails of Cold Steel critique I did this past week. Feel free to suggest topics or games you’d like to read my rambling thoughts on. Thanks for reading, hope you have great week!

This post was written while listening to the two released Off the Hook songs from Splatoon 2: Unnamed Splatfest Plaza music and Ebb & Flow
